Research

Alexander has always had a fascination with the relationship between characters and the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream media and, modern and contemporary British theatre. During is undergraduate course at the University of Lincoln, his final year thesis examined the representation of male bisexuality in contemporary media, exploring the idea that male bisexuality is rarely represented in film, television and theatre.

For his post-graduate thesis at the University of Lincoln, Alexander explored the post-dramatic and how the blaring of lines between reality and fiction can have an impact on the audience of live performance.

Alexander is currently undertaking research for a practice-based PhD through De Montfort University. His PhD research thesis is an exploration of intimacy and sexual behaviour on stage in contemporary British theatre. His thesis specifically examines to what extent physical acts of intimacy and sexual behaviour appear on stage between 2013 -2023, what function or purpose these acts serve in contemporary theatre practice and how the addressing of intimate scenes has developed over this period. His research is further concerned with how, in responding to current practices and how they have developed since the 2017 #MeToo movement, a production team engage with Intimacy Directors to ensure that ethical boundaries are met and maintained, and that consent is observed throughout the creative process.
