About

Alexander Millington is an accomplished theatre practitioner, educator, and researcher whose work spans multiple facets of performance, from writing, performing, producing and directing, to teaching and scholarly inquiry. He is best known for his contributions to the theatre world, particularly his work with the award-winning theatre company Split Infinitive, where he is the co-founder alongside his wife, Helen Millington.

As a founding member and artistic collaborator of Split Infinitive, Alexander has been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of contemporary theatre. His work with the company has often focused on exploring the complexities of human relationships, pushing beyond conventional narratives to delve into the untold and often uncomfortable aspects of intimacy, sexuality, and personal identity. With Split Infinitive, he has created innovative, bold performances that challenge audiences to reconsider the boundaries of theatre participation.

In addition to his creative work, Alexander is an educator and lecturer. He has taught theatre at various institutions, bringing his wealth of practical experience to the classroom. His teaching style combines academic rigor with real-world insight, fostering an environment where students can both learn the technical aspects of theatre and develop their own creative voices. Alexander’s ability to bridge theory and practice makes him a highly respected figure in both academic and artistic communities.

A significant part of Alexander’s academic research focuses on the portrayal of sex and intimacy on stage and is undertaking a PhD on the topic through De Montfort University. He has conducted extensive studies into how these themes are represented in contemporary theatre, exploring the psychological, cultural, and social dimensions of intimacy in performance. His research examines the importance of language in intimate scenes, the practicalities of choreographing intimacy and the emergence of the role of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, and has presented papers on the topic at a number of academic conferences across Europe. Through his work, Alexander seeks to create spaces where audiences can engage with difficult or taboo topics in a way that is both respectful and thought-provoking.

Whether through his creative work with Split Infinitive, his role as an educator, or his groundbreaking research, Alexander Millington’s work invites both audiences and students to question the world around them, offering new perspectives on intimacy, identity, and the transformative power of performance.
